St George, Utah

Painted Hills Realty, LLC – www.paintedhillsrealty.com

On a sunny morning, you can look out over the ancient lava fields and red sandstone cliffs that are the backdrop for the desert community of St George, Utah and surrounding towns.  The meeting of three distinct lands form the eco-system that is the basis of southwest Utah; the Great Basin Desert, the Mojave Desert, and the Colorado Plateau. Washington County has set aside 62,000 acres in 1996 to protect the endangered Desert Tortoise and other rare animals and plants through the Red Cliffs Desert Reserve. The Reserve is home to miles of trail systems which allow thorough investigation of this unique area.

The blue skies with occasional fluffy white clouds are almost blinding in color! You lace up your walking shoes and head up Snow Canyon State Park, where you feel you have your own private State Park to use.  The red mountains are breathtaking with the offset of ebony lava fields along the paved path. A half-dozen side trails take you into the back country where you will see Pinion pine and various other desert vegetation. The cactus start blooming in April and the colors are absolutely neon!

Average winter daytime temperatures are 53-60 degrees in Jan & Feb, 68-77 degrees in Mar & April and 86-95 degrees in May and June, making the St George area an excellent counter-balance to cold northern climes.  The “due South” location from Alberta along I-15 makes an easy two-day drive for snowbirds seeking relief from snow and ice.

Recreation

Within a 2 hour drive of St George you can visit Zion National Park and Bryce Canyon National Park and if you are in the mood for nightlife, there is nothing better than Las Vegas!  Nearby Utah State Parks which offer spectacular vistas, hiking, biking, boating and fishing are Snow Canyon SP, Kodachrome Basin SP, Coral Pink Sand Dunes SP, Quail Creek Reservoir and Sand Hollow Reservoir.  The emerald golf courses that dot the area see plenty of action all year long due to the mild climate of southwestern Utah.  There are 9 public courses in the area and several private courses. There is also opportunity for year-round tennis at several tennis clubs and public parks.

Plan on a 4-5 hour drive from St George to Canyonlands National Park, Arches National Park, Capital Reef National Park, Rainbow Bridge on Lake Powell, and Monument Valley in the four-corners area.  This is the area of the Southwest where the great Western movies were filmed!

Culture

The small town atmosphere of St George, Ivins, Santa Clara and Washington City belie the thriving community which embraces ‘The Arts’ whole-heartedly.  The world-renowned Tuacahn outdoor amphitheatre, set in the red cliffs of Padre Canyon in Ivins, is known as ‘Broadway in the Desert’.  At any given time there are several stage productions going on in St George. The St George Musical Theater, the St George Opera House, Dixie State College Concerts and the Tanner Amphitheater, in Springdale near Zions National Park, offer year-round entertainment.  Numerous art shows take place every year and the city has several fine art galleries.

Safety

According to the third annual “Most Secure U.S. Places to Live: rankings from Farmers Insurance Group, the most secure location to live in the United States is St George, Utah.  This makes the St George area a wonderful place for retirees or the semi-retired.  Baby Boomers are coming to St George for that second home for winter use and many will make this their full-time home.  Also, the Cost of Living Index ranks St George as having a lower cost of living than Phoenix & Tuscon, Arizona.

Pamper Yourself

If you want to take a day off from hiking, biking or golfing you can find several day spas to help you find your inner quiet.  In addition to several smaller retail spas, you will find Red Mountain Spa and Green Valley Spa, both world-renowned for their unique ability to put you in touch with serenity.

All said, this little corner of Utah has a lot to offer those looking for natural beauty, outdoor recreation and culture.  Come visit southwestern Utah.  You may never leave!
